history of music videos

The history of music videos

Music videos originated around the 1920s-30s when 'talkies' came about. The first original series of music videos was by spooney melodies in 1930, they were usually 6 minutes long and featured art-deco style animations which were combined with films of the performer singing. In the early thirties, cartoons were shown during live performances of musicians which was also an influence on music videos. Some musical films such as 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'.
However, it was the establishment of MTV that made music videos widely popular with the mass audience and allowed artists to market themselves. In 1981 the channel aired with the song 'video killed the radio star' and has continued to play mainstream music 24 hours a day ever since. In 1983, the most successful and influential music video of all time was aired on MTV, Micheal Jackson's video for 'thriller' broke the record for the most money spent on a music video, and set the standard for future videos. This was also important as it was instrumental in allowing other african american artists to be aired on MTV which has shaped the music industry that we see today.

From 2005 onwards, music videos have become more and more popular over the internet with the establishment of websites such as youtube and myspace which allowed audiences to access specific music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, rather than having to watch msic videos that they didnt particularly want to see when they watched televised music videos. This media technology has also allowed advertisers to become more prominant as the more popular music videos have adverts for certain companies attatched to it. The rise of youtube has allowed music video producers to be more adverturous with their filming aswell as there are less regulations on the internet then there are on television. This means that there have been more controversial music videos released in the past 6 years which has also helped in the marketing for certain artists as it gives them a large amount of publicity.
